The Royal Standard of Scotland

The Lion Rampant was first used as a flag in Scotland by King William I of Scotland (1165 – 1214). It was used as his own heraldic symbol leading to his nickname of William the Lion. At the battle of Alnwick in 1174 it caused his downfall as it enabled his recognition by a group of English knights who promptly speared his horse and captured the king. After his death it became the permanent symbol of the Kings of Scotland.
